R&B legend Brook Benton saved the best for last. Benton was one of the most popular soul singers of the late fifties through the early sixties, but as the British Invasion of pop and rock singers started dominating the charts, Benton's career seemed to tail off. He was virtually not heard from again until way late in the sixties, when arguably his finest song, and his last top ten hit, was released. The song was Rainy Night In Georgia, written by Tony Joe White, who was popular at the time for his hit, Polk Salad Annie. Some music critics of the time called Rainy Night In Georgia the perfect soul song, and...who am I to disagree?
