Samuel "Sam" Moore and David "Dave" Prater teamed up in 1961, and enjoyed a two decade career as probably the preeminent R&B duo. Sam & Dave's most successful time came when they recorded a string of top ten and top forty hits for Stax Records in Memphis. Their biggest hit came in 1967, with the Isaac Hayes - David Porter-penned the song Soul Man.
Soul Man was written during the time of turmoil of the black civil rights movement in the United States, and Hayes says the idea for the song came while he was watching the riots going on in Detroit. Hayes and Porter wrote the song to be about pride, about rising above one's circumstances. One interesting note on Sam & Dave...They made a lot of great music together, but both were ultra-competitive with each other, and NOT particularly the best of friends.
