I Believe in Yesterday

The Beatles made a lot of music that is considered classic rock and roll. One Beatles hit from the mid-sixties however stands out as a classic song, one that will likely still be played a hundred years on. The Beatles are credited with performing Yesterday, on the Help album. However, Yesterday is believed to be the first Beatles solo effort. It was Paul McCartney and his acoustic guitar, with a string quartet backing him up.

How popular is Yesterday? To date, there have been more than 2,200 cover versions of the song released by a variety or artists in just about every genre of music. "Yesterday" was voted the best song of the twentieth century in a BBC poll in 1999. The year 2000 saw "Yesterday" voted the number one pop song of all time on MTV and in Rolling Stone magazine, and it has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

BMI, which keeps tracks of such statistics, claims "Yesterday" has been performed in public more than 7 million times since its’ release late in the summer of 1965. That qualifies the song as a classic by any measure one cares to name.
