It Was Saturday Night Fever

September 17, 2015

Bee Gees - Night Fever (from Saturday Night Fever)

I was never a big fan of the Disco craze, but I did enjoy the movie, Saturday Night Fever. John Travolta with his dancing skills became the iconic image of the scene, in his white suit, with one arm in the air. It was also the white-hot time of the Bee Gees, with Barry Gibb's great falsetto backed by his twin brothers, Maurice and Robin. Tragically, the twins have both died at an early age, but Barry continues to perform. Here are music historian John Hale's comments.—TDR

This never was intended as a video. It was, in fact, three-and-a-half of the best minutes out of the smash late seventies movie Saturday Night Fever. However, the scenes leading up to John Travolta arriving at the disco, and the line dance that was shown with the Bee Gees song Night Fever literally captured the mood of the movie, and really, of the entire disco generation.

The "Night Fever" line dance scene was probably the ultimate moment for disco, coming in the late seventies as it did. A couple of years later, following Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," and disco was for all intents and purposes yesterday's news. However, if you enjoyed Travolta dancing the night away, and Saturday Night Fever as THE statement movie about disco, you're bound to love this video.
