My Name Is Sue, How Do You Do.

November 3, 2015

Johnny Cash is generally classified as a country singer, but that's much too limiting to him. Cash was literally one of the first, and certainly one of the best "Americana" singers. He might have been a lesser-known Sam Phillips discovery back in the 1950s than Elvis Presley or Jerry Lee Lewis, but only Lewis' career has lasted as long as Cash's did, and Cash went on to arguably be the ,ost popular performer to come out of Memphis' Sun Records stable.

Cash has at times been considered a rockabilly, a rock & roll singer, and a country artist, so it's hard to pin just one label on him. He was riding high as the sixties closed out, with his live prison-recorded albums, and a popular television show. Cash also scored his biggest hit in 1969 with a Shel Silverstein song Cash recorded in a live show at San Quentin Prison in California. "A Boy Named Sue" would top the Billboard Country chart, and spend three weeks at number two on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. "A Boy Named Sue" sold a million copies, and became Cash's best-selling and highest-ranked song of all.
