Del and Freddie Knew How to Rock

Del Shannon - Runaway

Back in the day when Rock and Roll was still in its early stages, there were some songs that deejays would call "Great Radio Records." These were hard rocking tunes that would jump out of the radio, and often were played coming out of commercial breaks or the news to energize the listeners. Two of my favorites were "Runaway," sung by Del Shannon, and "Palisades Park," done by Freddie "Boom Boom" Cannon.

Both songs were super-hits and made the singers household names. "Runaway" was Number One on the Billboard chart for four weeks straight in 1961 after Del made an appearance on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. Freddie’s ‘Palisades Park’ was also a huge hit the next summer in 1962.

Summer hits tend to be the ones we remember from our youth, a time of fun in the sun. I remember Tom Petty said one of his great memories and reasons for becoming an artist was riding with the top down and singing along with the blasting radio playing "Runaway."
