The Brothers Once Were Righteous

February 25, 2016

I spent some time with Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, The Righteous Brothers back in the day, they were great guys and in awe of their producer who created the records that made them famous, "Wall of Sound" producer, Phil Specter. Musicologist John Hale talks about one of their hits, "For Once In My Life," and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling."  -- TDR

Just Once In My Life by the Righteous Brothers had a lot going for it back when it came out in 1965, but it had one big thing going against it. That was the song that preceded it, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," the Righteous Brothers first Phil Spector-produced hit. Lovin' Feeling became one of the signature songs of the rock & roll era, and the poster song for so-called blue-eyed soul.

"Just Once In My Life" may not have achieved the lofty status of Lovin' Feeling, but it was a fine hit just the same for the Righteous Brothers. It was written by Carole King and her husband Gerry Goffin, along with Phil Spector. When released, it climbed into the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 music chart, making it to Number Nine. Surf rock band the Beach Boys liked "Just Once In My Life" so much that they included their own version of it on their album 15 Big Ones a few years later. These are the Righteous Brothers, and "Just Once In My Life."
