Nothing Compares 2 U

Prince was a prolific writer, producing dozens of his for himself and artists. Some were written specifically for the artist, others were well-selected covers. Here are some of Prince's most popular songs, performed by the man himself.

We began the post with his iconic song, "Nothing Compares 2 U." While best known as a Sinead O'Connor song, Prince performed it first. Arguably, this round goes to Ms. O'Connor, who turned a slow-burn, hey-girl song into a howling song of loss and despair.

Our next song, "When U Were Mine," appeared as a cover on Cyndi Lauper's debut album, She's So Unusual. While not a hit, it was well known among Lauper fans and a favorite at her concerts.

"Manic Monday" became a huge hit for the all-female band The Bangles. The lyrics, which complained about a demanding lover who made the protagonist late for work-when she's clearly the breadwinner, made it an unlikely feminist statement. Here is prince with one of his many women, Apollonia, singing his version in 1984.

Last but definitely not least, another song that became a hit for a female artist. "Feel For You" escalating funk legend Chaka Khan from someone your cool friends new about to the mainstream... as a one-hit wonder. Decades later, she reports that people still greet her with "cha-cha-cha-CHAKA KHAN," the song's opening, which she reportedly despised the first time she heard it.
