5 Hit Songs You Didn't Know Were Covers

Nothing Compares (To You)

This encore post originally ran on November 18, 2015.

Song: Nothing Compares 2 U

As Made Famous By: Sinead O'Connor

Originally Recorded By: Prince  & The New Power Generation

Prince has a long history of writing songs for female acts, both legit (The Bangles) and questionable at best (anyone remember Apollonia 6? Anyone?) Few acts have covered songs that he recorded first, however. Sinead O'Connor shot up the charts with a devastating cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U," accompanied by a video that was purely her singing straight into a camera. His version is a funky duet; Sinead's will rip your heart out.

I Will Always Love You

Song: I Will Always Love You

As Made Famous By: Whitney Houston

Originally Recorded By: Dolly Parton

Parton wrote and recorded the legendary song in 1973 when she parted professional ways with former mentor Porter Waggoner. She later re-recorded the song for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie soundtrack. (She also appears in the movie.) Her version is a quiet, reflective farewell to a relationship she knows is doomed to fail. Houston's raise-the-rafters belting of the song was recorded for her film debut, The Bodyguard. While Dolly did it first, Houston owns the song.

Hallelujah

Song: Hallelujah (1994)

As Made Famous By: Jeff Buckley

Originally Recorded By: Leonard Cohen

Cohen struggled for years to complete the song, but it took Buckley to hit its full potential. Buckley's version hit the stratosphere when it appeared in Shrek and later radio. The result: millions of small children everywhere singing an absolutely filthy song.

Time Is On My Side

Song: Time Is On My Side (1964)

As Made Famous By: Rolling Stones

Originally Recorded By: Kai Winding

This song has been covered several times since Kai Winding's original, but the Stones remain the most famous and closest to the original. Mick and company had a huge hit with the song, and remain the group most associated with it.

Crazy

Song: Crazy

As Made Famous By: Patsy Cline

Originally Recorded By: Willie Nelson.

Willie recorded this drowsy country classic before Patsy Cline, but she released her version first—and had the bigger hit. Nelson composed the song when he was still a songwriter for hire. He offered the song to Billy Walker first, but was shot down because it's a "girl's song." He then gave it to Patsy, who is forever associated with the song.
