As promised, here's the second part of a TDR Twin Spin; The Biggest Rock Song of all times with over 2 million Radio Plays: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. The music was written by Jimmy Page and lyrics by Robert Plant in a 250-year-old Welsh cottage called Bron-yr-Aur, sitting around a fire and I imagine very laid back. Plant said that he was in a bad mood, when all of a sudden the first line: "There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold/And she's buying a stairway to heaven" jumped into his head out of no-where...what he described as a quite frightening experience.
In 1971 Top 40 Radio wouldn't play records longer then two-and-a-half minutes, and so Atlantic didn't release it as a single; but they did put out a sample promotional record with the total 8 minutes on both sides, which instantly became a Collector's Item .
Top 40 was forced to play the entire eight minutes, which had ramifications for future long songs. However, on the fast growing "Underground," or, AOR (Album Oriented Rock) FM Format, it was the Holy Grail; leading it to become the 'Most Radio Played Song' in History.
It is still being played heavily to this day on the Classic Rocks Stations. (I once asked a Veteran Classic Rock Jock how it felt to play the same tune 10,000 times, and he replied, "No problem, I turn the monitor off and work the phones.") A couple of other comments:
1. Both Plant and Page swear that there's no hidden message in the Stairway.
2. If you played it backwards and heard a Satanic Message, you should have been locked up.
Enough gibberish, let's get to the Main Stage where The LED ZEPPELIN, are doing Stairway to Heaven Live in brilliant HD Picture and Sound. @therealdonrocks [if !supportLineBreakNewLine] [endif]A version of this post originally appeared on The Don Rocks Facebook page.
