Scott reminded me that Isaac Donald "Don" Everly turned 80 in February, his two year younger brother, Phillip "Phil" Everly, passed away in 2014. I've written extensively about the Coal Miner's sons with perfectly harmonized voices often, including our website/blog, but this rung a bell.
The Everlys were estranged for many years, and Phil said that it was worse than being married, they were together 24 hours a day rooming together, on-stage and traveling. After years of recording and touring they reached a point of disgust with each other, they even disagreed politically; one Liberal and the other Conservative.
Many groups have broken up because of inner-strife, but Phil and Don were like identical twins, as you'll see in this great video. The day Don died, Phil went into shock, "I was supposed to go first, I'm older," he said, and then came survivor's guilt. There's a lesson here for all of us, whether it be a relative or friend, if you've had a falling out with someone, try to mend those ragged edges while your both still alive...after their death there's no way to say, "I'm sorry."
So, Happy Birthday Phil Everly, your brother would have been 78. I found this great video with sharp black and white picture of them doing, "All I have to do is Dream and Cathy's Clown" in 1960, with Buddy Holly's band, The Crickets, backing them up. Fun Fact: It was the name, The Crickets that inspired Paul and John to name their group: The Beatles.
