Percy Sledge: When A Man Loves A Woman

A fellow named, PERCY SLEDGE, (Percy Tyrone Sledge) rose to have the #1Song on both the Top 40 and R&B Charts in 1966 with an emotional rendition of, WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN. What's most fascinating about Percy's career was that he jumped from being an Orderly in a hospital in Sheffield, Alabama, to being a star in one move. One of his patients at the hospital introduced him to the Record Producer, QUINN IVY, who signed him to a contract.

Percy Sledge Hit It Out Of The Park with his first release, the romantic ballad, "When A Man Loves A Woman," a song he said that he wrote about his girlfriend who left him to be model after he lost a construction job. In one of what was either a foolish or very generous move, Percy gave all the writing credits to the bassist and organist who helped him with the song...making them a ton of dough in the future.

The guys at Atlantic Records were ecstatic, because it would be the label's first Gold Record. The song became his signature tune, but Percy had several more chart records over the years, including: "Take Time To Know Her," which reached #12 on the Pop Chart in the U.S. Mr. Sledge became an international star, big in the Netherlands, Germany and Africa, where he averaged 100 Concerts a year in South Africa's Sun City, their answer to Las Vegas with entertainment and gambling. In 2005 the former emptier of bed pans was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Percy Sledge passed away at home in Baton Rouge of Liver Cancer in 2015, he left behind 12 children. But his music lives on, and we have a great HQ video of him doing his signature song When A Man Loves A Woman Live with a Big Band. @therealdonrocks
