Soul Legends: Johnnie Taylor

One of my personal favorite Soul Singers, was a gentleman named JOHNNIE TAYLOR, I never worked with Johnny, but he lived in the area and we'd run into him once in a while. Johnny came out of the Musically fertile ground of West Memphis. After recording for some obscure labels, and his own, he was signed to the legendary STAX RECORDS label in Memphis and dubbed: "The Philosopher of Soul."

It was a marriage made in Heaven, Johnnie sang like a bird, often with humorous although sexy lyrics, and at Stax he got to work with their "House Band," that was also known as BOOKER T. AND THE M.G.'s.

Two of the great artists/songwriters: Isaac Hayes and David Porter, wrote and produced the song in this post's video, "WHO'S MAKING LOVE," (With your Old Lady while you was out making love). That tune went Top 5 on the Pop Chart and #1 R&B, and sold Solid Gold, putting Johnny Boy on the Big Map.

On a more serious note, Mr. Taylor is also is credited with keeping STAX afloat along with Isaac Hayes and The Staples Singers, after the label's superstar, OTIS REDDING unexpectedly died in an Airplane crash.

Johnnie went on to have many more Chart Records, several both Pop and R&B hits and was also something of a chameleon changing style with the times: from Blues to Soul, Gospel to Pop and in the end...Disco.

I love this video, Johnnie's singing live with a hot band, and the audience is mostly on their feet dancing and singing along; an excellent example of the Soul music experience. So crank it up and chill out with Johnnie Taylor doing his biggest hit, "Who's Making Love" with good Picture and Audio. @therealdonrocks
