TDR received a message the other day asking why we weren't putting up more Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" stuff. So Scott found a video with great sound of one of his early super-hits, BE MY BABY, done by the Ronettes.
Phil was obsessed with Ronnie Bennett and eventually made her his wife. It wasn't until a decade or so later that I got to hang with her one night and heard the story of her "Bird In A Cage," captivity. When she was allowed to go out of the house and go shopping, money no obstacle, there was always at least one body-guard to keep her safe and make sure she didn't take off.
I remember Ronnie, a bit tipsy saying, "Donnie, he's crazy, I was afraid he'd shoot me." That was the first thing that came to mind the night I heard that Philly had (per court documents) brought home the hostess from the restaurant where he ate dinner and shot her in the face at point blank range.
But enough of throwing shade on Phil, I've heard he's adapted quite well to prison life even though they took his wigs away.
The Ronettes had 5 Top 40 hits in the mid-60's including: "Be My Baby", "Baby, I Love You", "(The Best Part of) Breakin' Up", and "Walking in the Rain."
"Be My Baby" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and The Ronettes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007; not bad for three girls from Spanish Harlem.
Fun Fact: The Ronettes were the Only Girl Group to tour with the Beatles, you can bet Phil was keeping on an eye on Ronnie. Fun Fact 2, "Be My Baby" was the first song Sonny Bono's girlfriend, CHER sang backup on with Estelle and Nedra. Here they are singing Live their hit song from 1963, "Be My Baby," with Phil's prerecorded track. @therealdonrocks
