The Chambers Brothers: People Get Ready

THE CHAMBERS BROTHERS were a group that came out of Carthage, MS, in 1954, doing Gospel and Folk oriented music. The Brothers: George-Bass, Lester-Harmonica, and Willie and Joe on Guitars, moved more heavily into Folk as that music gained popularity in the late 50's and early 60's, and began playing in Folk Clubs, like the the Ash Grove in L.A., where they met artists like Hoyt Axton, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Barbara Dane.

Dane introduced the Brothers to Pete Seeger who got them on the bill at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival after they added a drummer, Brian Keenan (affectionately known as the White Brother) and where the Chambers Brothers and Bob Dylan would both go electric to the fury of the Folk Fans, but excited younger fans to a point where they rushed the stage, something that had never happened at Newport before.

Shortly after the festival they released their first album, "People Get Ready." The Chambers Brothers had their one and only Pop Hit with the single, THE TIME HAS COME TODAY, in 1968 using psychedelic elements like echo on the voices and drums.

The original song written by Joe and Willie clocked out at 11 minutes, but was edited for Radio Play and spent 5 weeks on the Top 40 Chart reaching #11, just missing the Top 10.

The Chambers Brothers were never able to repeat that chart success and due to dishonest promoters and managers lost most of their money and tired and disgusted broke up in 1972 going their separate ways. But let's go back to 1968 when the Brothers were on a roll, performing their hit "The Time Will Come Today" in early Color TV with High Quality Sound. @therealdonrocks
